Bouldering in Central Australia

Goshen at the Vic Boulders (Glen Helen)

While not the main focus of this guide, there are a few nice bouldering areas in Central Australia. Many waterholes, gorges and climbing areas described in this guide have numerous bouldering opportunities, but have not been described as they are not worth a visit purely to go bouldering.

The two areas described below are excellent bouldering areas, in remarkable little bouldering fields. Note that a car with some ground clearance is required to get to these areas.

Vic Boulders
Hard and polished sandstone boulders between Glen Helen and Ormiston, quite similar to what you might find at Mt Arapiles (Vic). Quite a few nice problems are to be found here, with grades from V0-V5, some harder (and bolder) problems exist, but it's well worth repeating many of the easier ones.
To get there, head out W to till you're about 2km past the Ormiston Gorge turnoff. A track heads back to the right at the waterpump station - as the main road goes down to a small creek. Take the track and follow it through a small range. When it forks, take the road to the right until you reach the boulders.

Orange Creek
Brilliant little boulders, on some nice solid rock. Some landings are bad, but there are enough good ones to keep you amused. Some large boulders may require a toprope. Quite a few problems, with grades from about V0 - V4. Harder ones await ascents!
To get there, drive 100km S from Alice Springs to Stuarts Well. Turn left up a track (private road), directly opposite the fuel station. Take your first left and follow the track for about 400m till you see a hill strewn with boulders. Permission may have to be obtained from the landowners of Orange Creek Station.
