About the Author: Goshen Watts

I've been climbing since 1993, and have climbed at dozens of locations around Australia. I have family in Alice Springs, and have visited the Red Centre almost every year since 1992. I've climbed at nearly all the crags in this guide, and over half of the existing routes - putting up many new ones along the way.

I don't actually live in Alice Springs, I live with my girlfriend Katrina in Geelong, Victoria, and I manage Kitepower Australia - a kite shop in Geelong. Other hobbies include kiteboarding and mountainboarding.

The reason for this guide was the lack of information easily available for both local, and visiting climbers to Alice Springs. When this guide was created, there had been several attempts at producing a written guide, but nothing that got near a printing press. There is a guide that is now printed by locals, which is slowly making this online guide out of date. The locals have not chosen to contribute to this online guide, so for new information, you'll have to buy the guidebook.

However, this online guide still serves to inform visitors about what to expect in the Red Centre, and to help with planning a trip. It's been a fun journey, but I'm sorry to say there won't be many more updates to the content of this site.

My climbing experience at a glance:
   - Metres climbed to March 2003: 20,700m
   - First Ascents: 1,100m
   - Free Soloed: 3,350m
   - Highest Onsight Grade: 25
   - Highest Redpoint Grade: 28
   - Favourite climbs include: Non Stop Action Groove (28); India (28, 2nd go); Ozymandias Direct (M4, 1day solo ascent); Pre-Nuptual Adventures (23); Life's Sad Parade (25); The Grand Cuppaccino (18M4, solo); and a thousand more.

Many thanks to all my climbing partners, past and present:
Richard Lodge; Damian (Yerba) Auton; Paul Bromley; Keiran Culhane; Steve Thornton; Troy Dunn; Daniel Reve; Matt Lauder and David Quigley to name a few. Thanks also to anyone who has held on to a rope at any stage, and extra thanks to Damian, and the Yerba crew, who introduced me to the wonders of climbing around Alice. Also a special thanks to Paul, who saved my life.

Extra credit is also due to Keiran Culhane, who started to produce a guide to the region a few years ago, but who is now living in Japan with plans to travel the world. Kieran gathered much information, including the re-writing of the 1973 guide, and kindly left me his notes.

Thankyou also to Larita for assisting in typing up many pages of existing routes.
