Trephina Gorge
Distance from Alice Springs: 60km East
Walking time: 10 mins
Climbing: Moderate
Shade: Afternoon (from 1pm)

Summary:
Cliffs abound at Trephina, but unfortunately not much of it is any good. The climbs described are in the main gorge, but check out the cliffs on the way in! There is a rumor that a climb has been done up the large buttress (on R) on the way in to the gorge, but this is unconfirmed.

Access and Ethics:
Don't place any bolts in the gorge.

Getting There:
Head East out of Alice on the Ross Hwy for 60km. Turn L into the Trephina Gorge National Park. From the main tourist car park walk up the riverbed into the gorge.

Spangled Grunter 10m 22
From carpark, approach gorge past line of river gums on L. Pumpy short wall facing you where the gums end, just before the rock paintings. Start at flake near R end of wall, then L to thin seam near top. Simon Mentz, Rebecca McCowen 4/93

Raven 40m 12
Prominent butress 300m up from the entry to the gorge, and 100m short of the waterhole. Up cracks on the LHS, passing some small ledges to roof. Swing R (crux) then past more ledges to the top. Keith Seddon, John Griffiths 1973

Raven Direct 6m 22
Old problem. Step L above the crux of Raven and climb steep crack. Simon Mentz, James McIntosh 30/4/93

WARNING: Many climbs in Central Australia have loose rock, runouts and bad protection. Exercise extreme caution at all times. Whilst all care has been taken, accuracy of descriptions and gradings, etc. cannot be guaranteed.
